It's not going to be changed, nor should it be, it's not causing any confusion...there's how many schools around here with the Central part in it's name? And how many with just "Central"? Only one I know of in this part of Virginia at least, maybe one other in the entire state and I know of a Central High in Memphis TN. It's really not a problem at all, having the same mascots is more confusing(blue devils vs. blue devils) then having one part of a name that's in another name such as Central/Sullivan Central, not that confusing or a problem...not heard of any complaints of confusion at all. Reagardless, it was clearly in the rules to not have a town name in the new names, that's the most obvious breaking of that rule and the entire reason it IS Central and not Wise/WC Central as originally proposed.
I have heard complaints about it being confusing. If it wasn't confusing then why is it that the newspapers and TV always put the "Wise" in with Central? It is because they need to have a better description of what Central team they are talking about.
Naming it Central was a flubb-up for sure in my opinion.
to make it official, this media guy IS complaining. I NEVER call them Central. Maybe next year, or the year after, but not this year, because the casual listener has NO idea who/where "Central" is, OR they think Sullivan Central, because that's the only one they've heard of b4.
Over in KY, there's no problem, because the Centrals all have the co. in the name. In the county, you just call them Central; I'm sure if you were to say Central's playing Clintwood tonight while over in Harlan Co., they'd think HCC, not the one in Wise Co.
Considering both schools had red in their colors, the exception was made, plus black incorporated as well...so you just answered your own riddle. It was a different case with Appy's blue and and PV's for example. If "Wise" wasn't the name of one town, you could probably get away with it in the other two name changes. People can't appreciate how the anti-side picked apart everything and complained, the few papers/wcyb that cover us can't appreciate it either. Really don't understand how confusing it is, everyone around here knows exactly where it is and people in a lot of area's do as well, at least they are as familar with it as they were JJK or JIB...most don't have a clue where the hell they were/are before if they didn't play us and if someone is playing us and don't know where we are, then why are they even playing us? I don't know where half of the schools are located around here, didn't have a clue where Thomas Walker or Twin Valley was for the longest time and it's the same way with a lot of people and other schools...if they don't have to make the trip, they couldn't care less. If you don't know where Central is, you probably don't know where Eastside is either, why does it even matter?
This isn't even considering that the STUDENTS picked the names, the vote was taken with the public and then within the schools, the top names were picked from them and student/parent committee's equally rep. from both schools chose those names/colors/mascots. Changing the name to that not only creates problems from the anti-side, but I don't think the students would be too thrilled with the admin. changing what they picked, designed the logo's for and have embraced just so a few people might know where one of the schools are located as if it's the least bit relevant to them. Way too much hassle for really no reason whatsoever.
Big difference in redoing a few rooms for a small staff, as opposed to tens of millions to upgrade everything for the entire schools that thousands of kids will be using and abusing for the next 50 years - all while having to renovate several times again during that time.
but why was the exception made when before they even picked colors it was told that No colors from the old schools would be used in the new schools? seems it is ok to break one rule and not another? and as far as JJK or JIB, there was just one Kelly there is several Central's so that is the difference. Has nothing to do with where the school is, it has to do with making a designation between the Central name. they could have used Indian Creek Central and it would have seperated it from Sullivan Central, Letcher Central and so on.
Maybe it was because the two schools shared those same colors. Unlike the other four who did not share a similar school color.
